Future Fortified CampaignFebruary 27, 2012Good nutrition is something we may take for granted here in the United States, a variety of food is so easily accessible and available to most of us and a choice we make daily for ourselves and our family. Every person in the world needs good nutrition and should at least have access to it right, yet many people do not. Can you imagine? I couldn’t, so I was happy to learn about an organization making a difference. Future Fortified, a campaign of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is dedicated to helping and educating millions of women and children worldwide gain access to nutrients needed to lead healthy, enriched lives. Research suggests that undernourishment during the first 1,000 day window, the time from pregnancy to age 2, makes children more susceptible to later complications such as heart disease and obesity, damage sustained from poor nutrition during this time is irreversible. Good nutrition is essential for health, brain development and physical growth. Future Fortified focuses on Home Nutrition Packets supplied to families to prevent malnutrition in under-nourished countries. These packets can be home delivered or purchased at pharmacies (depending on country) and cost pennies, affordable for low-income mothers around the world. These single serve, 1 gram packets are sprinkled onto foods prepared in the home and contain vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, iron, zinc and folic acid, essential nutrients for pregnant women, new mothers and their young children. INVEST = Visit donationpay.org to make a tax deductable donation. INFORM = Connect with the Future Fortified community on Facebook and Twitter and help spread awareness and give support. INFLUENCE = Influence policy makers to put nutrition on the global political agenda. With two children of my own, I am grateful I have such good resources readily available and admire the people who help bring it to others who cannot easily obtain it themselves. I hope you will join me in bringing awareness to this global issue and these wonderful organizations! blog comments powered by Disqus |
